Grout Pen FAQ
Everything you need to know about using grout pens to refresh your tile grout.
1. What is a grout pen and how does it work?
A grout pen is a specially formulated marker that recolours and refreshes tile grout lines. It contains fast-drying, anti-mould ink that bonds to grout and creates a clean, uniform finish.
2. Can grout pens be used on floors?
Yes, grout pens are designed to work on both wall and floor tile grout. For floors, allow extra drying time and avoid heavy foot traffic until fully cured.
3. Do grout pens work on coloured grout?
Grout pens are suitable for use on both light and dark grout. If applying a light colour over dark grout, multiple coats may be needed for full coverage.
4. How long do grout pens last?
Grout pen results typically last between 1–3 years, depending on usage and cleaning frequency. In low-traffic areas, the finish can last even longer.
5. Can I use grout pens in a shower?
Yes, grout pens are suitable for bathrooms and showers. Allow at least 24 hours of drying time before exposing the grout to water.
6. Do I need to seal grout after using a grout pen?
Most grout pens contain sealant in the formula and do not require additional sealing. However, applying a clear grout sealant on top can offer extra durability.
7. How much area does one pen cover?
One standard grout pen typically covers between 40 and 60 linear metres, depending on the width of the grout lines and number of coats applied.
8. What if there's mould on my grout?
You must clean and treat any visible mould before applying a grout pen. Covering over mould without treatment may cause discolouration or recurrence.
9. How should I prepare the grout before use?
Clean the grout lines thoroughly using a suitable tile and grout cleaner, and let them dry fully before applying the pen for best adhesion and finish.
10. How long before I can walk on the floor?
It's recommended to wait 24 hours before walking on floors treated with grout pens. In high-traffic areas, giving it 48 hours ensures better durability.
11. Can grout pens be used on silicone?
No, grout pens do not bond to silicone sealant. They are designed specifically for porous grout and will wipe off non-porous surfaces like silicone.
12. Are there different colours available?
Yes, grout pens come in a variety of colours including white, black, grey, beige, and more to suit your tile and design preferences.
13. Does the colour fade over time?
Grout pen ink is formulated to resist fading, but harsh cleaning chemicals and scrubbing can shorten its lifespan. Gentle maintenance helps retain colour.
14. Can I apply multiple coats?
Yes, you can apply additional coats once the first layer is dry. This is useful when changing to a significantly lighter or darker grout colour.
15. What tip size should I choose?
Grout pens are available with fine or wide tips. Use a fine tip for narrow grout lines or precision work, and a wide tip for quicker coverage of large areas.
